Villa Maria continues its legacy of multiple award-winning successes with a huge win at the Romeo Bragato Wine Awards 2015. In all five trophies and 12 gold medals which included Champion Wine of the Show for one of the four gold-medal winning Chardonnays.

“The Bragato Trophy went to this beautifully handled Chardonnay because in simple terms - it was exceptional. The wine had a sense of place and it was a pleasure to savour and taste” said Chairman of Judges Ben Glover.

Villa Maria’s Ihumatao vineyard is located in a wind protected crater of an extinct volcano on the edge of the Manukau harbour in Auckland. Its free draining soils and a unique soil profile lead to the production of this very distinctive Chardonnay.

In addition to Wine of the Show and Chardonnay Trophy, Villa Maria also picked up trophies for Champion Domaine Wine, Champion Sweet Wine and Champion Classical Red Wine.

Villa Maria Company Viticulturist Ollie Powrie commented on the wins: “The Bragato Wine Awards recognise the effort from the work in the vineyard right through to the winemaking.  This incredible result reflects Brett Donaldson’s (Auckland viticulturist) passion and meticulous vineyard management over a decade resulting in a proud history of consistently producing outstanding Chardonnay. That teamed with trophy wins for Hawkes Bay and Marlborough wines too are testament to the fact we have an outstanding team producing world-class wine throughout all our regions,” he said.

Designed to recognise viticultural excellence, the Romeo Bragato Wine Awards acknowledge the influence grape growers and their vineyards have on the unique qualities of specific wines.
